Chiropractic Care Safe For Children Under 3 Years

The July 2008 issue of the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics reports on a study that concludes chiropractic care is safe for children under 3 years of age.

The 3-year retrospective study was done at the teaching clinic practice at Anglo-European College of Chiropractic in Bournemouth, England. It examined the chiropractic files of 781 children. 574 (nearly 75%) of them were under the age of 12 weeks.

Over the period of the study, 697 children received 5242 adjustments. 85 percent of the parents reported an improvement. Only seven parents reported an adverse effect (such as slight muscle tightness and/or soreness) with none of them serious enough for hospitalization or lasting longer than 24 hours. This translated into a reaction rate of 1 child in 100, or one reaction for every 749 adjustments with no serious complications.

The authors concluded that chiropractic care produced very few adverse effects and was safe for children in this age group.
