Epilepsy, kids & chiropractic

The March/April 2001 issue of the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics published the results of a literature review which found that a group of children with a history of epileptic and other seizure disorders reported positive outcomes as a result of being under chiropractic care.

Research from the years 1980 through 1998 was reviewed. This study involved 17 cases of children with epilepsy who received chiropractic care. 14 of the 17 children had been taking anti-convulsive medications without success.

All 17 children who received chiropractic care reported positive outcomes in frequency and intensity of seizure episodes. Many of the children were able to drastically reduce or even eliminate anticonvulsant medications.

In many of the cases, the children involved began their history of seizures after a fall or some other significant trauma. In some cases, after improvement under chiropractic care, seizure activity began again after another trauma.

Commentary: This article points out that some 2 million Americans have epilepsy with an additional 125,000 cases developing each year. Approximately 50% of those new cases involve children and adolescents.

In light of the results of this study, how many of those people suffering from epilepsy need to be under chiropractic care? How many people with epilepsy could benefit from reduced frequency and intensity of attacks? How many could benefit from a reduced or eliminated use of seizure controlling drugs that have their own list of dangerous side effects? The truth is that everyone can benefit from a reduction of nerve interference as a result of a chiropractic adjustment to correct a vertebral subluxation.
