People Without Symptoms Experience Health Benefits Under Chiropractic Care

A literature review presented at the Ninth Annual Vertebral Subluxation Research Conference in Spartanburg, South Carolina in October 2001 found that patients under chiropractic care, regardless of whether or not they were experiencing any symptoms, showed measurable improvement in many areas of body function.

Chiropractors have long held that vertebral subluxations (misalignments of the small bones of the spine that interfere with body function and health) are detrimental to overall health and wellness. This study shows that “Health Benefits” in the form of measurable improvements in body function, despite the presence or absence of sickness, are supported by research findings.

According to the author, Dr. Sean Hannon, the review revealed that in “20 peer-reviewed, published studies that specifically involved “asymptomatic,” “healthy,” or “normal” subjects, health benefits of some kind were observed in all twenty studies.”

Fourteen other studies showed Health Benefits in subjects who had no symptoms or pathology described. Hannon says these studies “demonstrate how the patient’s symptomatic presentation is not necessarily relevant to administration of chiropractic adjustments and any subsequent health benefit.”

The Health Benefits described included, but were not limited to, improvements in the respiratory system, cardiovascular system, immune system, muscular strength, visual acuity, mental functioning, the limbic and endocrine systems as well as overall health and wellness.

All different types of studies were represented in this review: controlled trials, randomized, single and double blinding, as well as retrospective, pilot and case studies.

Hannon concludes “there is an increasing body of evidence to support the contention that individuals presenting without symptoms can benefit markedly from chiropractic care.”
